What are Allergic Skin Diseases?
Allergic skin diseases are reactions that occur when our skin and immune system show excessive sensitivity to some internal or external factors, and manifest themselves with symptoms such as itching and swelling.
Symptoms of Allergic Skin Diseases
The most common symptoms of allergic skin diseases are:
- Sudden swelling, redness, itching and edema on the skin
- Skin lesions, rashes, crusts, wounds or cracks
- In some cases, the allergic reaction may worsen and cause life-threatening complications such as respiratory distress, low blood pressure, shock or death
Causes of Allergic Skin Diseases
The causes of allergic skin diseases may vary from person to person. However, generally the following factors may cause an allergic reaction:
- Medications, especially antibiotics, painkillers, anti-inflammatory or chemotherapy drugs
- Infections, especially bacterial, viral or fungal infections
- Insect or bug bites, especially bee, wasp, scorpion, tick or flea bites
- Foods, especially peanuts, walnuts, eggs, milk, fish, shellfish, strawberries, tomatoes or gluten-containing foods
- Sunlight, especially in people who are sensitive to UV rays
- Psychological factors, especially in people who experience stress, anxiety, depression or trauma
- Temperature changes, especially in cold, hot, humid or dry weather conditions
Treatment of Allergic Skin Diseases
The treatment of allergic skin diseases starts with identifying and eliminating the factor that causes the allergy, if possible. In addition, the following treatment methods can be applied:
- Creams, lotions, ointments or gels that reduce itching and inflammation
- Tablets that suppress the allergic reaction, such as antihistamines, corticosteroids or immunosuppressants
- Vaccination treatments that strengthen the immune system against allergies
- Biological agent treatments, especially for resistant or severe allergic skin diseases
Prevention of Allergic Skin Diseases
The following precautions can be taken to prevent allergic skin diseases:
- Avoiding foods that cause allergies and reading labels carefully
- Choosing skin care products that do not contain allergens, suitable for sensitive or baby skin
- Not keeping pets at home or staying away from animal fur, feces or saliva that cause allergies
- Avoiding hot environments, stress and sun or taking protective measures
- Recognizing the symptoms of an allergic reaction and consulting a doctor immediately
- Having an allergy test to find out the factors that cause allergies and staying away from them
