What are Calluss and Warts?

Calluss are skin lesions that occur as a result of skin thickening and hardening in areas of the body that are exposed to friction and trauma. Calluss usually occur on the feet, hands and knees. The most obvious feature of calluss is that they cause pain.

Warts are contagious skin infections caused by a virus called human papilloma virus (HPV). Warts can occur anywhere on the body. The most obvious feature of warts is that they tend to multiply and spread.

Why do Calluss and Warts Occur?

Calluss occur as a defense mechanism of the skin. When the skin is exposed to constant friction and pressure, it thickens to form a more resistant layer. However, this layer hardens over time and becomes painful.

Warts occur when the HPV virus comes into contact with the skin. The virus enters the upper layer of the skin and causes the cells to grow and multiply abnormally. This leads to the formation of bumps called warts. The virus can be transmitted through small wounds, cracks or cuts on the skin. Also, touching a person with warts, using an item with warts or touching a surface with warts can cause the virus to spread.

How are Calluss and Warts Treated?

Different methods can be used to treat calluss and warts. These are:
  • Drug treatment: In this method, creams, solutions or bandages are applied to the area with callus or wart. These drugs soften, dry or irritate the skin, causing the lesion to peel or fall off.
  • Cryotherapy: In this method, cold application is made to the area with callus or wart with -190 degrees nitrous oxide gas or liquid nitrogen. This application causes the lesion to be destroyed and broken by freezing.
  • Cauterization treatment: In this method, the area with callus or wart is burned with electric energy. This process causes the lesion to be burned and eliminated.
  • Surgical treatment: In this method, the area with callus or wart is surgically cut and removed. This method is usually preferred for calluss. Warts are not recommended for surgical treatment because of the risk of infection spreading.

How to Prevent Calluss and Warts Formation?

The following measures can be taken to prevent calluss and warts formation:
  • Do not walk barefoot. The feet are the most common area exposed to friction and pressure. Therefore, to protect the feet, suitable and comfortable shoes should be worn. Also, keeping the feet clean and dry is important.
  • Do not use other people’s clothes or items.Warts are contagious and using other people’s clothes, towels, slippers, nail clippers and so on can cause the virus to spread. Therefore, personal hygiene should be paid attention to and other people’s items should not be used.
  • Avoid situations that cause trauma.Wounds, cracks or cuts on the skin create a ground for the virus to spread. Therefore, to protect the skin, situations that cause trauma should be avoided. For example, nails should be cut short, shaving should be done carefully, skin should not be dried and moisturized.
